How Generative Engine Optimization differs from traditional SEO, and the concrete steps that make content more likely to get cited by AI search.

GEO Isn't Optional Anymore: Getting Cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews

A meaningful share of research and buying-decision queries now get answered inside an AI Overview, a ChatGPT response, or a Perplexity summary before anyone clicks through to a website at all. Ranking well in traditional search no longer guarantees visibility in these answers, which is what Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is actually about.

How GEO differs from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links. GEO optimizes for being the source an AI model chooses to cite or synthesize from when generating a direct answer. The two overlap heavily (technical health, real authority, and genuine expertise still matter for both) but GEO adds requirements traditional SEO doesn't emphasize.

What actually helps

  • Extractable, self-contained answers. A clear, direct answer near the top of a section, not buried in a long narrative lead-in, is far easier for an AI model to lift and cite accurately.
  • Genuine depth on a narrow topic, rather than shallow coverage of many topics. Models tend to cite sources that demonstrate real expertise on the specific question being asked.
  • Structured data that clarifies what a page is about. FAQPage, Article, and Service schema give models an explicit, machine-readable signal about content type and structure.
  • Crawler accessibility for AI-specific bots. Confirming GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended aren't blocked in robots.txt is a basic but easy-to-miss prerequisite; a blocked crawler means zero chance of citation regardless of content quality.
  • An llms.txt file, a plaintext index of your site's key content, is a newer, still-optional signal some AI crawlers use to understand site structure faster, similar in spirit to a sitemap but written for language models rather than search indexers.

What doesn't help

Keyword stuffing and manipulative structured data provide no benefit here, if anything, models trained to recognize genuine expertise treat manipulation attempts as a negative signal, the same as increasingly sophisticated traditional search algorithms do.

Measuring whether it's working

This is the hardest part of GEO right now: there's no equivalent of Search Console for AI citations yet. The practical approach is manual spot-checking, periodically asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overview real questions your content answers, and tracking whether and how you're cited over time.
